Portland Is the New Berkeley: “Occupy ICE” and Antifa Mayhem

antifa Berkeley ICEPortland, Oregon, is competing with San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, and Seattle for the title of “Furthest Left City” on the Left Coast. Over the past several weeks, the “City of Roses” chalked up a couple more points toward winning this dubious honor. First of all, Portland was one of the earliest and most aggressive Blue Democrat cities out of the starting gate with an “Occupy ICE” campaign aimed at blockading the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices and terrorizing ICE employees. Starting in mid-June, hundreds of activists surrounded the Portland ICE office with a tent city, trashed the neighborhood, and harassed and threatened the local residents and businesses as well as the federal ICE office workers. Second, over the past weekend, hundreds of “Antifa” thugs (who describe themselves as anti-fascist, but use violent fascist-communist tactics) rioted and fought with Portland police as well as members of Patriot Prayer, a conservative group that was holding a rally in Portland’s Waterfront Park.

While much of the “mainstream” media either ignored or reported positively on the escalating radicalism of “Occupy ICE PDX” (as the Portland occupiers style their protest), social media videos and citizen journalists exposed it for the criminal, left-wing enterprise that it is. One of the few reports in an establishment media organ to credibly reveal the seamy underside of this faux “immigrant rights” operation is an August 3 article by Andy Ngo for the Wall Street Journal, entitled“Anarchy Breaks Out in Portland, With the Mayor’s Blessing.” The subtitle told more of the story that the rest of the liberal media have pretty well covered up: “A vicious mob targeted the ICE office and even a food cart. The police followed orders to do nothing.”

In his opening paragraph, Ngo let some malodorous facts replace the rosy fragrances that the media bouquets had floated about the anti-ICE/anti-Trump agitators. Reporting from the scene, he wrote:

“Along the trolley tracks behind the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office, a biohazard cleanup crew works under police protection. It finds used needles and buckets of human waste simmering in nearly 100-degree heat. The smell of urine and feces fills the block. For more than five weeks, as many as 200 people had occupied the site to demand ICE’s immediate abolition. They’re gone now, but a community is left reeling. Thirty-eight days of government-sanctioned anarchy will do that.”

“A mob surrounded ICE’s office in Southwest Portland June 19,” the WSJ reporter noted. “They barricaded the exits and blocked the driveway. They sent ‘guards’ to patrol the doors, trapping workers inside. At night they laid on the street, stopping traffic at a critical junction near a hospital. Police stayed away. ‘At this time I am denying your request for additional resources,’ the Portland Police Bureau’s deputy chief, Robert Day, wrote to federal officers pleading for help. Hours later, the remaining ICE workers were finally evacuated by a small federal police team. The facility shut down for more than a week.”

Ngo reports on a federal ICE officer who was trailed by a car of protesters that had followed him to the summer camp where he was picking up his daughter. They then showed up at his home to intimidate him and his family. Another officer had his name and photograph plastered on a poster outside his home with the label, “Gestapo.”

Spewing Racist Epithets, but Hey, no Hate Crimes Here

Some idea of the intensity of the hate emanating from the Occupy “progressives” can be seen in a YouTube video of Occupy ICE PDX activists hounding a black ICE officer, repeatedly calling him a “F****** N***er” and a “piece of s***.” (Warning: the video has very harsh, profane language.)

The Oregonian reported that in e-mails obtained by its newsroom, “one African American officer reported to an administrator that protesters ‘began yelling racial slurs’ at him, including the N-word. The officer said he was also called a ‘blood traitor’ and an Uncle Tom.” “These racial slurs have been directed at me throughout the entire length of the deployment,” the officer wrote.

Another officer, who is described by The Oregonian as “a woman of Hispanic and Native American descent,” said she was “called derogatory terms for Hispanic people and told she is ‘a weak female’ and a ‘traitor.’” “I was berated for so long I can’t even remember everything that was told to me,” she wrote.

Naturally, Mayor Ted Wheeler and his fellow “progressives on the Portland Human Rights Commission have made no mention of this. CNN, the New York Times‚ and their fellow Fake News operatives have not found this to be newsworthy. Of course, if some unknown fringie attaches himself to a Trump rally and utters a statement that is (or can be twisted to appear to be) racist, the same progressives and their media allies can be counted on to obsess over it for days, weeks, months — indefinitely.

“The mob set up camp behind the [ICE] building, where they harassed journalists and banned photography,” Ngo reported. “The open-borders advocates also erected an 8-foot wall around their site. I walked through and saw young children, including infants, in squalid conditions and 90-degree heat. Every American flag was defaced. Anarchist and communist flags were unsoiled.”

Ngo interviewed local neighborhood residents and business owners who were physically attacked and threatened, and their property was damaged. “Lisa Leonard, a 53-year-old disabled resident, said occupiers hit her on her head, disabled her electric wheelchair, and lifted her in the air when she complained about loud drumming. She called police, who took a statement but made no arrests.

“Where were the police? Ngo asks. “Ordered away by Democratic Mayor Ted Wheeler, who doubles as police commissioner.”

Elected Collaborators

Hmmm. Does this sound familiar? It should; it’s a replay of the Occupy Wall Street operation of 2011. The epicenter of that Marxist-contrived event was Zuccotti Park, near Wall Street, in New York City’s financial district. In an article entitled Occupy Wall Street: Lawlessness & Communist Revolution, your reporter wrote at the time:

“This writer visited Zuccotti five times during the period of October 11-16. The packed space did indeed reek of raw sewage, unbathed bodies, and marijuana. And, contrary to the OWS propagandists and their media allies, the occupiers do not in any way resemble the 99 percent of Americans they claim to represent. Unlike the much larger Tea Party events all across the country over the past several years that drew millions of working-class and middle-class Americans fed up with run-away government spending, taxing, and regulation, the Occupy Wall Street gatherings can be aptly described (for the most part) as counter-culture freak shows: bongo-banging tie-dyed Sandalistas and Woodstock wannabes spouting Marxoid drivel and socialist cant. Banners and posters featuring images of, and quotes from, Marx, Lenin, Mao, and Che Guevara, are plentiful. Some protesters do indeed also invoke Jefferson and Madison, but usually in a manner intended to fuse the statements of America’s Founding Fathers into an endorsement of anarchism, communism, or socialism.”

Like Mayor Wheeler, New York City’s mayor at the time, Michael Bloomberg, told the police to stand down, thus allowing the Occupy “demonstrators” to engage in illegal activities (blocking street and sidewalk traffic, tenting and camping in the park, using and selling drugs, violating curfews and noise levels, urinating and defecating on private and public property, disturbing the peace, accosting and threatening residents and passersby, etc.) without repercussion. This reporter interviewed residents, as well as owners of restaurants and shops in the area whose lives had been turned upside-down, and their businesses all but ruined by the invaders. Finally, after two months of this abuse, New Yorkers had had enough of the lawless freak show. Mayor Bloomberg was forced by public pressure (and the very real health threat posed by the filthy park conditions) to send in the police to evict the self-proclaimed “revolutionaries.” The taxpayers were stuck, as always, with the cleanup bill.

In Portland, Mayor Wheeler and City Council officials, such as Chloe Eudaly, were likewise forced by the health codes and growing public anger to finally evict the occupiers from their squalid squatter camp. However, they continue their solidarity with the protesters. On July 23, Commissioner Eudaly issued a statement defending and supporting the Occupy ICE PDX camp while also announcing her agreement with the occupiers’ decision to disband the encampment.

Ignoring abundant evidence to the contrary, Commissioner Eudaly asserted that:

“The camp was organized, peaceful, and successfully sparked a nationwide effort bringing attention to the despicable actions of the federal administration. The protesters were collaborative, respectful of the neighborhood, and I proudly stood with them and over 180 elected officials to call for the abolition of ICE. My office has since been in daily communication with the camp as we provided assistance where we could, including material support and liaising between the Department of Homeland Security and Portland protesters. I called for time on the City Council agenda to hear from protesters and the New Portlander Policy Commission. I also investigated legal recourse to revoke ICE’s Conditional Use permit, which regrettably is simply not an option at this time.”

Eudaly’s claims notwithstanding, it should have been clear from the get-go that the Occupy ICE PDX would be anything but “peaceful,” “collaborative,” and “respectful.” One of the first calls put out by Occupy ICE PDX organizers urging activists to join them in the Portland, as well as to initiate similar actions across the country, was made through the website ItsGoingDown.org, a principal conduit for the violent Antifa movement.

The Occupy ICE PDX leaders, in their call to action on ItsGoingDown.org stated:

“Beginning on Sunday, June 17th, community members from all walks of life, working together with the Direct Action Alliance, Portland Assembly, and the Portland Democratic Socialists of America, organized a protest in the area around an ICE facility in southwest Portland with legal support provided by the National Lawyers Guild….

“Make no mistake, ICE is a white supremacist organization following the orders of a white supremacist administration, and the intent of these policies is to discourage all nonwhite immigration, legal and illegal, and to preserve the power of the rapidly shrinking white majority….

“Portland has declared itself a sanctuary city, but this facility stands in the way of that…. Furthermore, the gates to our country must be opened, not closed. This means an immediate halt to the fascist policies accelerated by Trump…. We invite the rest of the country to join this movement, to gather and occupy your local ICE facility until it’s shut down….
F*** La Migra!”

In addition to employing Antifa’s standard, incendiary rhetoric that tars all opposition with the racist, fascist, white-supremacist labels, many of the Occupy ICE PDX agitators also wore the typical Antifa masks. These were obvious clues that this was an Antifa operation and that it would be anything but peaceful. If further clues were needed, they were provided by the organizers’ admission above concerning the key involvement of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the National Lawyers Guild (NLG). As we have reported previously, the NLG has been for nearly a century (according to a 1950 congressional report) “the foremost legal bulwark of the Communist Party.”

However, the clear leadership of Antifa, the DSA, and NLG in the Occupy ICE PDX campaign did not deter Mayor Wheeler, Commissioner Eudaly, and other officials from actively supporting the agitators’ lawless and dangerous actions. This was a replay of similar actions by left-wing Democrat mayors around the country who have aided Antifa violence. They include Mayor Mike Signer of Charlottesville, Virginia; Mayor Sam Liccardo of San Jose;  Mayor Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans; Mayor Jesse Arreguin of Berkeley — to name but a few.

Following the disbanding of the Occupy ICE PDX camp, the Antifa agitators had a new ready-made target: Patriot Prayer. On August 4, members of Patriot Prayer and The Proud Boys held a rally in Portland that drew hundreds of masked Antifa counter-demonstrators. Washington-based freelance journalist Mike Bivins posted his own live video coverage and commentary from the event on Twitter. Among the notable things provided on his feeds that are rarely, if ever, shown in the national media are images and video of the all-black-clad Antifa group Bivins dubbed the “Soviet squad,” due to its members carrying red flags and wearing black helmets emblazoned with a red hammer and sickle. One of his videos shows members of the Soviet squad tugging on an American flag held by a male Patriot Prayer supporter, when another Antifa Soviet squadder comes up from behind and clobbers the Patriot Prayer man in the head with a bat, sending him to the ground bleeding and apparently in great pain. The Antifa attacker then faded back into the crowd. These are typical Antifa tactics, which we saw, for instance in the infamous case of the sneak attack with a heavy steel bike lock by an Antifa thug in Berkeley that was caught on video. The masked thug, who clobbered a man from behind, turned out to be Eric Clanton, a philosophy professor and “peace activist!”

The August 4 Patriot Prayer rally ended with Portland riot police separating the two opposing forces and using pepper spray, rubber bullets, bean-bag guns, and batons against the Antifa crowd, which had ratcheted up the violence to throwing missiles at the police. Police arrested four Antifa activists. As to be expected, the ACLU of Oregon called the Portland police response “completely unacceptable.” However, according to the ACLU, apparently, it is completely acceptable for their anarchist-communist clients to create mayhem and violate the rights of their fellow citizens.

They are Communists and are freely trying to finish the job cut off by MaCarthy in the 1950’s. He was right. There were communists all over the federal government and Hollywood. They still are and now on the street. Do not accept the liberal’s sugar coating, These are the official Molotov bomb throwing thugs from 1917 in Moscow and 1936 in Munich. Watch out.

Thank you for reporting this; I listen to national news from different outlets and have only heard reported a bland generalize dish of Pablum.

My question of the citizens of Portland: where are you on voting day? If, like so many, in fact the majority, of voter are, you got what you wanted.

If these low life’s love the Communist agenda so much, why don’t they just find a country that meets that craving. I know the answer like anyone else, they WOULD NOT get away with their tantrums like they are throwing in our country, and they know it also!

If “protesters” show up in masks, why aren’t they arrested immediately? We know from experience they intend violence and mayhem, and should be removed from the scene immediately. Of course, common sense doesn’t always come into play. I was returning from an overseas trip a few weeks ago and people in full burkas were strolling through the “security” checkpoints as if it wasn’t there. I don’t know where our brains are, putting up with this stupid garbage. We Americans has no rights any longer. Had I complained about the burka group, I’d have found myself in a locked room somewhere in the bowels of the airport for hours. Decent citizens are treated like criminals, while criminals run free among us shouting about their rights. The world is on its head.
We moved out of the left coast and now reside in the south where people are still pretty civilized and kind.

America’s first amendment extends to everyone — and all forms of ‘expression.’ THIS NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. I would like to see Trump ENCOURAGE a return to CIVILITY — & permit PEACEFUL PROTESTS only. We need to arrest and HOLD, for serious charges and jail sentences, ALL VIOLENT PROTESTORS; those who hurt or kill police; those who deface the flag; those who try to OBSTRUCT speakers on campuses or anywhere, and certainly those who burn cars and buildings; riot and loot. I would not oppose police using live ammunition and killing a few of these disgusting un-American traitors — the violence would stop. We need the National Guard; arrests of some governors and mayors (for breaking Federal law and not complying with immigration mandates, etc.)

TRUMP needs to declare what IS and IS NOT acceptable — and those who don’t comply will be punished. Our Sheriffs and most police swear to UPHOLD the US CONSTITUTION. Therefore Police need to follow Federal law — not some progressive a**hole mayor or governor. The longer we wait to take control of our country back from these renegades, the tougher it’s going to be. Right after the November election is a great time to start.

Imagine you are in the city to take your wife out to dinner. You get caught up with these yahoos. You are unarmed and surrounded by thugs. What then? The democrats all want your second amendment rights removed and , the free speech rights removed what then? Have you ever thought of it that way? Constitution rewritten. Food for thought.

Only cowards wear masks. They obviously don’t have the courage of their convictions to stand and be counted for them. If they want socialism, go somewhere else. It doesn’t ever work except for those in power – they have all the conveniences, etc. Doesn’t work for the people!

One on one, they are but “cowards”. This is not about Freedom of Speech to enhance America, but to incite violence and take America down. Lock them up..better yet send them to Quantico, Va. and have some common sense beaten into them by some fine young Marines. Cowards hiding behind their masks.

This spreading evil is exactly why we cannot stop support for the electoral college in presidential elections. If we do, the largest cities in each state which are all full of racist bigots on the left will control every state and you won’t have a say anymore. You would think that organizations paid for by communists, such as antifa’s violence, would be stopped by police and Portland is a disgrace to Democracy the longer they tolerate this abuse of liberty. ‘Paybacks a bitch’! Its com’n and it won’t be pretty!

These mind-numbing, vicious acts are being perpetrated on responsible citizens leading productive lives. As condemnatory as these acts are, why should this surprise us? One only has to look back to riots that took place in Baltimore, MD in April 2015. Freddie Gray was taken into police custody and died from apparent self-inflicted injuries while flailing around in a police van. BEFORE any trial took place, the Media had convicted the police in ‘the courtroom of public opinion.’ Sensational reporting tinted perceptions which whipped the public into a frenzy! Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake (D) told the police to stand down and ‘give space to those who wished to destroy.’ She later denied having said this, claiming her words were misrepresented. Can’t un-ring that bell! So in a super-size tantrum the criminals/protestors destroyed everything! This included innocent citizens losing livelihoods and homes by looters & arsonists. Protestors? Protestors use words not rocks, tire irons, and torches. (see Martin Luther King, Jr) Resist labels. Observe patterns that connect. Make appropriate changes. Avoid mass Media and KNOW your sources!! The newspaper-liner-for-bird-cages states opinions and NOT facts! It takes time, intelligence, and reflection of values to get it right! The public has to hold Media accountable. This is a participatory government! Let your feet do the walking, and your finger do the talking on the ballot. VOTE!! Then, remember to call your representative!

The 60s freaks from Haight-Ashbury have been expanding for quite a long time, breeding along the way. After defiling San Francisco, a once heavily Christian city, they’ve migrated to the north tainting the coast of Oregon and Washington as well. While many counties in these three states are “red” and inhabited by normal human beings, the coastal urban areas are a lost cause. The elected officials are as seditious as it’s populace. These sewers no longer bear any resemblance to American cities, exhibiting American values. After building the wall on our southern border, we may want to consider building another. To those patriotic, conservative people still living in these cesspools…escape while you can!

Remember what happened to New York City Mayor Bloomberg when he forbade police officers from dealing appropriately with the occupiers? The law enforcement officers in unison TURNED THEIR BACKS ON HIM in a show of protest. Good for them, I say!

This is absolutely disgusting. What the heck is going on in this country? We enjoy so many freedoms in return for simply obeying the law. And now we citizens are not even afforded the basic protections that WE PAID FOR! The masked criminals run riot through our cities and are ignored, when kids’ lemonade stands are shut down by cities and towns all over the country! RULE OF LAW!

You don’t want to turn your back on this ugly lot—if they’re willing to assault a disabled woman in a wheelchair, imagine what they’re capable of doing when you’re not looking!
I’d have packed my bags by now, and headed elsewhere. Leave these places to rot in their own filth and their twisted utopian social justice fantasy.

I was still working in NYC when Bloomberg pulled that stunt with the Occupy Wall Street bums. The police response he received was the most measured act of civil disobedience the LEO’s could publicly do without incurring a political backlash from the Governor or Mayor. The OWS bums not only created a public health and safety hazard, but they effectively destroyed dozens of small businesses in the area by driving the normal public traffic away. Bloomberg, a Democrat who ran as a “Republican” to get elected, has since dropped all pretense of being anything other than the Progressive Democrat he has always been. Anyway, that is a discussion for another day.

Portland is an example of what happens when there is a mass migration, starting in the mid 1990’s, from an ultra-left part of a liberal state, in this case California, to the adjacent states surrounding it. Many of those fleeing California for the surrounding states brought along their liberal views and biases. In essence, their desire to re-create the exact same environment they just fled from. As they became a greater percentage of the voter base in their new states, they invariably voted for the same type of leftist politicians and causes that caused the state of California to become the socialist wonderland it is today. Today much of both Oregon and Washington states are bastions of the left. Their state houses dominated by so-called Progressive Democrats. This is the potential downside of mass migration from liberal states to more conservative states, if those leaving their “liberal h*ll holes” don’t leave behind their liberal mindsets and adopt the values of their new states. So is it really any surprise that Portland is now experiencing the same type of far left protests and associated violence and destruction of public and private property that has become the norm in most of California’s cities?

The WSJ did a very good write-up, with many more details around this staged attack on the ICE office and surrounding area and residents. What was described were all classic strategies employed by Marxist groups and governments around the world to isolate and intimidate any opposition to their socialist agenda. In short, no resistance or alterative views would be tolerated and suppressed by any and all means necessary.

That these type of actions would not only be tolerated but condoned by local government officials, all Democrats spewing the same progressive talking points, speaks to the dangers of allowing this “twisted utopian social justice fantasy” to spread unchecked across the nation. States like California, Oregon, Washington and several east coast blue states are already what I would consider to be lost causes. My state of New Jersey, already a long-term Democrat stronghold, just elected a uber progressive Governor with the exact same socialist agenda as the pols in Oregon. The left views the thugs of Antifa, BLM, OWS, etc as heroes to be cheered for their views and actions. All groups financially funded and organized via the Soris network of Open Society front groups.

That the cultural rot of liberal California and other blue states is spreading should be a flashing red warning light we all pay attention to and work to actively stamp out. Elections have very real long-term consequences, as in the case of what has already happened to what we call blue states. Remember, many of these blue states used to be considered red at one point in their histories. So current red states really have to think long and hard about what would hapoen to their nice balanced budgets and low taxes, if say they welcomed in a couple of hundred thousand liberals a year from blue states that wanted to start re-create their old liberal environment in their new home state.

People can no longer afford to be complacent or apathetic when it comes to voting. Voting is the way the people ensure their government represents them and their values long-term. Voting is how Portland elected a Mayor that told his constituents that he agreed with Antifa and wasn’t going to order the police to clear out the demonstrators or arrest them even after Portland residents were assulted or threatened. Sitting out elections or whining that none of the candidates exactly meets hour standard of perfect, so you don’t vote, is how you cede control to the people who want to tear your towns and states down. People need to learn from these examples like Portland to ensure this doesn’t eventually happen to them.

Excellent, PaulE. And frightening! As you described how the liberals pack up their misguided ideals and take them to their next fertile field, I thought, “This is a cancer that is spreading.”

All of these Occupy, Black Lives Matter, Antifa, and Marxist/Socialist anarchists accomplish nothing, but end up costing taxpayers a ton of money. Why should we have to pay? For many business owners, their life savings go up in smoke. I feel strongly that the perpetrators should be rounded up and made to reimburse their victims, and serve some serious time in prison, too. No federal funds for sanctuary cities or where the local officials turned their own backs on the mayhem by doing nothing. Get Soros!

We have to do more than elect representatives who say they won’t let this happen. We need to demand protection when this DOES happen in our neighborhoods. We must not allow our local officials to sit back and let it play out, like they did in Ferguson and Baltimore, causing many millions in property damage. Immediate armed action from law enforcement in response to these uprisings should be written into the municipal code, and they shouldn’t have to wait for permission from the mayor…There must be some way to appeal to the courts when the idiots in the mayors’ offices choose to let their own cities burn down.

Two steps forward…. and I envision sitting on the front porch with weapons by our side being commonplace. My daughter bought a gun recently—and good for her—she’s in one of those sanctuary cities and is beginning to question her own liberal leanings.

These “collaborative, respectful and peaceful” thugs comprising Antifa will one day receive their due punishment! The likes of the radical Mayors and City Councils that comprise the “Sanctuary Cities” will also one day receive their just punishment for allowing these extremists to run rough shod over truly peaceful protesters, citizens and business owners. How on earth can anyone be so blinded by these extreme, radical groups and call them “peaceful”? America had better get behind our POTUS and begin to demand an end to Sanctuary cities and rid ourselves of runaway radical officials like Portland’s Mayor and Council members! Further, we need to stand strong behind President Trump and demand that the Senate and House come down from their Ivory Towers and start listening to us who want nothing more than to see the “rule of law” followed word for word! The ACLU, to mention one radical organization needs to be disbanded for preaching the law of the land while violating the rights of we, the true citizens of America! I have said this before, the only way to combat this is to fight back and beat these coward thugs with the same tactics. They will run home to mommy in a heart beat. What should take place at these rallies is a counter plan to have several hundreds conservatives to organize and surround these thugs from behind, just like in war because this is WAR. You beat them down until they no longer have any will power. I get so angry and irritated when I read article like this. Also, the mayors, and people like them, need to have their properties destroyed and harass them and their families. The police in these are also cowards and their names and pictures need to plastered all over facebook etc to expose them.

Bob, fast-track all the officials and politicians who enable the bottom feeders to run wild, it don’t matter from what liberal civil rights activist group they come. Take out the enablers … then lock up the protest groups when they step out of bounds, and put them all in Arizona or E. Texas tent jail facilities to serve their time for terrorism and treason against the United States! … That should be enough to reform them to be able to ease back into the true American culture.

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
