Good Things May Result from This Crisis

goodAny good news today? Maybe so. You are kidding right? No, just thinking about long-term trends from this “corona event” … What do you see in your telescope eyepiece? Just this.

While the survivalist, compassionate neighbor, and decision-maker in each of us focuses near term, some long-term trends are quietly taking shape. Here are a few.

First, Americans in middle school, high school, and college, while managing remotely, are experiencing this event and comparing it to America’s jolt on 9/11, as many saw 9/11 as a modern Pearl Harbor.

Of course, 9/11 was not Pearl Harbor. Casualties resulting from 9/11 hit home and hurt. But on the numbers, they did not compare with casualties of World War II, which left 85 million dead globally. Likewise, this pandemic, while jolting, is not 9/11.

On the other hand, one result of 9/11 – like Peral Harbor – was a surge in young Americans joining the military. Suddenly, the value of military service was obvious. Many young people shifted gears, spun the wheel, and directed themselves to protecting our nation. In 2002, enlistments leapt from 74.577 to 79,585, and kept rising.

Similarly, we may see a shift in how young Americans direct their lives as a result of the pandemic. Younger Americans are witnessing how important and rewarding medicine, science and emergency response can be. Serving others as a vaccine researcher, emergency room doctor, hospital nurse or administrator, medical data analyst, emergency medical technician, first responder or ambulance driver comes with high purpose. We may see more of that ahead.

Second, increased societal preparedness for health crises will follow this one. We can expect more tailored medical research and guidance, policies, practices, protective equipment, and lessons learned.

Third, while politicians grouse and joust – and media turn the pandemic into politics – Americans are being wise. On local and individual levels, people are pulling together, rediscovering an ability to think for themselves, weighing evidence, and making good decisions.

Individuals are showing can-do, adaptivity, resourcefulness, self-reliance, and a long-hidden capacity to self-direct, within state guidance. Individuals, friends, and family are getting creative, making masks, assessing risks and rewards, and remembering how to exercise good judgment.

Concern is surfacing about age-old liberties – our sacred rights to free speech, worship, assembly, and travel, freedom to keep and bear arms, and to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures.

At the same time, we are seeing new interest in federalism – that is, states’ rights and limits on federal power. Believe it or not, we are having an overdue conversation about state powers over citizens and state prerogatives against the federal government. That is good. Our Founders would like that.

To his credit, President Trump is refusing to federalize this crisis. He is allowing states and local governments – closest to the people – to be deciders of policy. Like the best presidents, he is offering support, but refusing to crush constitutional rights which belong to individuals and states.

The effect of these practical civic lessons is likely to endure. Individuals are being reminded how precious freedom is, how important that we defend it, and how easily governments can usurp it.

While a balance exists between public health and individual liberty, the Framers made clear that the presumption favors individual liberty over government control, in context of responsible citizenship.

A fifth long-term effect will be forced rethinking about federal debt. By the time this storm passes, we will have more national debt than gross domestic product in a year. While interest rates are low, they will not be forever. A nation unwilling to pay debt is shackling future generations – a moral outrage. Good news, like it or not, is we must discuss the federal debt.

Sixth, this crisis has thrown the switch on Communist China, putting them on a different track. America’s relationship with this lumbering, unaccountable, morally indefensible, and opportunistic nation has changed.

Americans have learned a hard lesson: Dependence on – and ignoring the intentions of – a communist country is dangerous. It was with the Soviet Union, and it is with Communist China.

For 40 years, we hoped China would “come around,” respect human rights, learn accountability, reduce aggression, align with Western values, become a good global citizen. We became complacent, and almost fatally dependent.

In this moment, we can see China as it is. They originated a deadly virus, then looked away. They have lied about what they did, about virus origins, transmissibility, number of infections and lethality. They politically suppressed truth-saying doctors, controlled messaging by the World Health Organization.

Worse, they threatened to withhold pharmaceuticals, as we have become 80 percent dependent. They withheld personal protective equipment (PPE) – and continue to do so. They blamed others with outlandish stories, accepted no responsibility, showed no remorse, see economic and political opportunity in the crisis – which they originated.

As the pandemic continues, they profit from selling medical supplies, placing new pressure on Taiwan and Hong Kong, taking military actions in the South China Sea, arresting Hong Kong’s freedom movement. They have unleashed a pandemic that shut down the global economy, now aim to profit. America can be naïve no more. China is a nation centered only by communist ideology and power.

Finally, we have gained insights into uniting to beat a common foe – in this case, a virus. After Pearl Harbor and 9/11, we thought we were together, again one nation. For a time, we were. Then we frayed. Perhaps we will remember this time – being one nation matters. All things considered, some good things may result from this crisis.

I hope that people start putting away an emergency fund. Three to six months of expenses is the recommended amount. With ” interest free” money, individuals and businesses have taken on way too much debt. Now they are in a bind. Self-sufficiency means a stronger nation.

What I hope to see is the beginning of the end for brick and mortar colleges and the indoctrination of students, I hope parents and students alike see the value of learning and getting degrees online. Saving thousands and keeping our kids from years of debt and liberal learning, let’s take back the education of our children.

I concur with Susan Perry. We are not one united nation. Our constitution speaks of God given rights. What if there is no god? From whom would we get our “rights”? The answer would logically be “from government”. Which rather large group of Americans embrace and advocate this very notion? No, I’m afraid we are not and cannot be united as a nation. The two concepts are incompatible. The big issue is that one of those concepts will destroy the country our founders created. Can we prevent that from happening?

Good article for conservatives, however, I don’t see the Left recognizing any of those points. Instead, I see them doubling down on their Communist ideals. I have not seen one single Democrat change their hatred of Trump or his supporters. I see governors who are turning into fascists, I see neighborhood apps where neighbors are spying and reporting on each other, intolerance is rampant, and churches are still under shutdown. I believe I see many more negatives than positives in the outcome of Covid 19. Lawsuits are as numerous as raindrops and when this is over, people will be blaming each other. Demonstrations are happening to sway the Dem governors, but to no avail. Our own governor in NM is using the state police to arrest good citizens who just want to open their business. One town is under lockdown with no traffic in or out! I still see the mainstream media spreading lies about conservatives such as we don’t believe in science and data, because we don’t believe THEIR “science” and “data”. Sorry, but I just don’t see the Left opening their eyes to the truth at all, in fact I still see a Civil War looming in America’s future.

Bad as it is the corona virus pandemic has an up side, it could have been something much worse. This is giving us a chance to learn how to deal with more serious emergencies at a gentler rate. Maybe the people who suddenly realized they might run out of toilet paper will, for while anyway, see to it that they have a sufficient stock of necessities on hand to last through the next crisis.

THE CHOICE WE MAKE IN NOVEMBER WILL DECIDE IF WE THE PEOPLE REMAIN FREE OR WE BECOME A SOCIALIST COUNTRY DEPENDING ON THE GOVERNMENT FOR EVERYTHING AND IN THE END A NEW WORLD ORDER! IF ANY OF YOU ARE SMART YOU WOULD SEE THIS IS NOT ABOUT DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS THIS IS OUR LAST CHANCE TO SAVE AMERICA FROM THE TYRANTS WHO WANT TO DESTROY IT! EVEN IF YOU DO NOT LIKE TRUMP YOUR VOTE IS NOT FOR TRUMP IT IS FOR AMERICA! REMEMBER THIS. A VOTE FOR A DEMOCRAT IS A VOTE TO DESTROY AMERICA AS WE KNOW IT!

I have tried not to buy anything made in China for a number of years now, but sometimes it is very hard. If a piece of clothing says it is made in China, I will not buy it for myself or my family members. It is time that we stop importing slave labor products from China and start making medical supplies, clothing, etc. in America or import them from other sources. China should not be making medications because who knows what is in them…how many times was something wrong like plastic in dog food? Buy Made in America or Made in USA and bring back our manufacturing plants and jobs from China. States need to start welcoming businesses and stop taxing them to death and regulating them with so many costly rules and regulations beyond what is reasonably necessary. Wake up people.

This crisis will not even begin to start us in the right direction toward Federalism unless Republicans in the Senate stand together and defeat Democrat efforts to have the Federal government bail out states that have been fiscally irresponsible and created their own fiscal problems before the virus appeared. The Federal government has an important role in responding to true emergency conditions, but it has no valid role in funding state and local government responsibilities. Covid19 aid should go to individuals and companies as needed, but should only fund state needs to the extent of DIRECT virus emergency aid, not including loss of revenue. The role of the Federal government is to fund only worthy programs and projects that are NATIONAL in both scope and purpose.

Over 100 times God Commanded us in His Bible: fear NOT–means trust God more. 1 of my favorite prayers which applies to many challenges: Lord God, what do You Want me to do about this? Then wait on God for His Answer. He Knows everything; but He Gave responsibilities to us to refuse to accept wrong; fight spiritual warfare, not fists, name-calling, etc. God Says What He Means & Means What He Said. Our Bibles are our user’s handbook covering everything we need to win in every area.

Thank you for that very thought-provoking article. You pointed out some very likely positive impacts of the virus. Surely, it has resulted in shining a light on some inconvenient truths about our complacency. It is time to regain our independance or we will have to surrender to those we are dependant on. The fact that socialism can even be mentioned by name and not squashed is unbelievable. Our youth (education issue) and some older Americans have been drinking the koolaid and have not looked at history for guidance. I pray your predictions come true, otherwise America will cease to exist as we know it (or knew it).

What I don’t see happening enough is fear of the left.
What we are living now is a dry run for socialism, for tyranny. I want more people to learn that the news media lies and is biased to the left, that Pelosi and company will do anything to keep power over our lives, that Dem governors have become mini tyrants while Rep governors want to allow us more personal freedom.
I want more Americans to vote Republican for president and for congress.

Please Vote Straight Republican. I know, I know there are RINOs, but probably two RINOs are better than one Democrat.

Our inalienable rights are naturally given to each of us from our Creator. NOT the government!
(US Legal defines inalienable rights as rights that cannot be surrendered, sold or transferred to another person. These rights can be surrendered, sold or transferred only with the consent of the person who possesses the rights. An actual or constructive consent is necessary to transfer inalienable rights.) Our founders wanted VERY LIMITED GOVERNMENT, WITH VERY LIMITED POWERS! Hope this crisis WAKES PEOPLE UP to the fact of what people are saying in and out of elected office and to what the tyrannical power over reach is doing. Hope it changes some people’s mind toward FREEDOM ! Remember this crisis and VOTE!

Our Constitution has established VERY LIMITED POWERS by the Federal government, but also intended by the structure of our government was Federal government FUNDING only for NATIONAL needs, not those of the states and local governments. Limited power also means a limited spending role.
